Germany – DFB comments on human rights in Qatar during World Cup 2022
The German Football Association (DFB – Deutscher Fußball-Bund ) criticized Qatar for the protest of the Germans not being able to express their opinion freely. This was at the start of the match between the German national team and its Japanese counterpart.
“It wasn’t about making a political statement – human rights are non-negotiable. That should be taken for granted, but it still isn’t the case. That’s why this message is so important to us. Denying us the armband is the same as denying us a voice. We stand by our position.”

This is why the German Football Federation considered this action as political interference. It is obligatory not to engage in issues that Qatar has prohibited. For reasons that require all participating nations to respect the State of Qatar in its civilization, religion, and laws during the World Cup.
That’s why German players put their hands over their mouths while taking a group photo.
